Count It Out

For one thing, when you have an addiction, people tend to blame everything that's going on in your life on your addiction.
And it's so easy to sit there and say that that's the person's only problem and that there's nothing else underneath that, or anything else that led them to that in the first place.
Let's not talk about the abuse, the poverty, the lack of education. No, let's just blame everything on the addiction because that's what's causing all the current medical problems, right?
2
Specialists. Of course.
I mean, once you have a doctor that says, "Well, actually, we think you might have such-and-such condition," fill in the blank, go see the specialist.
And then suddenly the specialist is like, "No, we don't want to see you. We think that you're fine," or you don't have a condition that warrants us to see you for whatever reason.
But the other doctor just said—
Pause.
They interrupt you.
"No. It doesn't really matter what he said. We're going to go with what we think. Thanks. Bye."
3
People are already counting you out.
A lot of people already figure that if you're an alcoholic, you're addicted to whatever you're addicted to, and you're always going to be addicted to that.
And, you know, for the most part, I would say that people don't change—not without their own reasons. They have to want to do it for themselves. Otherwise, no, it won't happen.
But to be treated as though everyone is incapable of change, or that they won't find a reason, or don't care about themselves enough to change, well, it's just not the truth.
I have things I look forward to.
I have things that I want to do.
I have things I want to experience.
And a big part of that is making sure that my health is as well as it can be.
So if I have to quit, then I have to quit.
As of writing this, I am now one week sober.
Yet again.
My third time trying to quit alcohol.
Well, you know what they say: third time's the charm.
4
I never really believed in that four-letter word.
I still don't.
I consider it a fairy tale.
I think about Tina Turner's song, "What's Love Got to Do with It?" because what does it have to do with anything I've talked about, or what I've always been talking about?
Maybe some of it I haven't talked about here yet.
But I guess I could start now.
Reality is, we live in a country that promotes sex at an astronomical rate, and yet nobody talks about how important it is that people actually have sex or masturbate.
No.
That's a big no-no.
There's a word that you're not supposed to use.
Nobody's talking about how sexual health can tremendously affect mental health, so when one slides, the other one slides dramatically.
You ever wonder why some people are happier than others?
Do you ever ask them?
You probably wouldn't ask them candidly, but if you could, the answer would probably be because they masturbate more.
Or they have more sexual partners.
So what am I getting at?
Love doesn't mean anything, but sex means everything.
5
Five fingers.
To give a high five, or a handshake, or some other kind of human connection—things that are becoming more and more rare.
I've also noticed that touch overall has become more and more rare.
And nowadays, you have to be careful just hugging anybody because then they could say that you touched them inappropriately, even though it was just an average, everyday hug.
People can't be friendly.
They can't afford to be nowadays.
One wrong step and one post on social media, and suddenly you're branded a pedophile or some other thing just because you wanted to hug someone.
6
Six is about the number of hours of sleep that I get at best.
I guess everyone's hoping that it will get better now that I quit drinking, although I have little faith that it's going to do anything for my insomnia.
Oh, wait.
Never mind.
I have no faith.
So I'm quite certain it will do nothing for my insomnia.
7
No matter how much somebody tells you you're sexy, beautiful, you matter, fill in the blanks, blah, blah, blah, reality is, you have to be able to feel it yourself on the inside.
If you don't believe it, then it doesn't matter who says it to you.
I'm not sure how I feel about it.
I used to think, "Oh, I'll take everyone's word for what they're saying."
Then I found a lot of liars and realized, now, I should just take everyone's word with a grain of salt.
But then I thought, well, what do I think about myself?
Do I feel sexy?
Do I feel beautiful?
Do I feel anything?
And right now, I don't know.
I'm able to help people in some small way—some of my friends online. You know who you are.
But I'm not sure I really feel anything about myself.
There's some days where I feel nothing at all.
I might as well be an alien.
And, in fact, I often feel like an alien.
Other days, I don't feel like I matter at all to this world.
I'm just here.
But then there were days like yesterday that kind of made me question a little bit why sometimes things can just line up, and whether everything works out or not, the fact that everything just kind of falls into place like dominoes suddenly makes me question the world.
It makes me question existence.
And I still keep leaning towards simulation theory.
8
I was thinking the day before last about some abuse I suffered while I was a teenager by my mother and my stepfather.
I've talked about it in my memoir, and I'm sure I've talked about it before here in the journal as well, so we won't really go into the details.
But I'm not sure why it came up again.
And it didn't really hurt me.
In fact, I felt so distant and removed from it that I was rather surprised.
I guess it was a reminder of what I survived, of what I had to do to survive, and that I'm not going to let anything stop me from surviving.
Do whatever I have to do.
9
My therapist says, "Don't give up on people. Take a walk. Do something that's going to make you available so that somebody could find you, and you never know what may happen from there."
I don't really believe in it.
And I'm also too lazy to probably go out and do anything at this point.
And in a lot of ways, I have given up on people.
But maybe not in every way.
I still try to socialize online, so that's an easier outlet for me.
But I've had to change the way I was socializing before because what I was doing before was making me more lonely, and it just wasn't helping me the way I wanted it to.
I don't think I'll get into the details of that right now.
But the bottom line is, I tried to choose something that was going to help me and help me sexually, but it just made me feel more lonely, and I couldn't do it anymore.
So I did meet someone.
And maybe something will happen.
We have a date set.
Maybe nothing will happen.
I don't know.
But I don't want to get my hopes up anymore.
I do know that this is the last person I will ever ask for this.
If it doesn't happen this time, then it will never happen.
At least I won't be the one asking anymore.
Am I saying that I'm giving up on people in person?
Yeah.
Pretty much.
It's one thing to chat with perfect strangers.
It's another to tell them, "Hey, I just want to get fucked, okay? Can we just go over here and get this done, and then when that's done, can you like go home and I go home? Thanks. Bye."
I was trying to decide if I wanted to be that honest about it.
But yeah.
At this point, I just don't fucking care anymore.
This is my last chance to get what I want, and either I'm going to have it or I won't.
10
Ten years of being an alcoholic.
Ten years of blackouts.
Ten years of lost memories.
Ten years of people treating you like the alcohol, if you are, by the way.
And ten years of everyone else not knowing about it.
Finally coming to a point where, if I want to live, this is it.
I have to quit.
I don't think I'll get back the memories that I lost.
And I don't think I'll change some people's minds.
They'll always see an alcoholic.
They'll always see somebody that in their opinion is wearing a black tag already.
I'll always be someone that's just not worth their time, I guess.
And that's okay.
I'm not here to change their mind.
I'm here to change everyone else's.
So you don't be like them.
